CALES Career Talk: Arizona Fish and Game Department

Join the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences (CALES) Career Center for our weekly Career Talks. Each week, students connect with professionals across science, conservation, and public service careers. Complimentary lunch is provided to students who RSVP and attend in person.

This week’s Career Talk features Jim HeffelfingerWildlife Science Coordinator with the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD). Jim plays a key role in guiding wildlife research and conservation efforts that support Arizona’s diverse ecosystems.

During this session, Jim will share how AZGFD manages and conserves more than 800 native species, spanning mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. Students will learn why Arizona has one of the most active and comprehensive conservation programs in the country, addressing species at all life stages and across varied habitats.

Jim will also discuss how science is the foundation for all conservation and management decisions at AZGFD, from population monitoring and habitat management to policy development and long-term planning. This Career Talk is especially valuable for students interested in wildlife biology, ecology, natural resources, conservation science, field research, data-driven decision-making, and public agency careers.
